ACTIVITIES
Performing Arts

The Performing Arts program at Matoaka is made up of three departments:

All of these departments are elective departments. Campers may choose to add these to their own schedule if they wish to do so.

Theater

The drama department consists of four instructors, all of whom have an extensive theatre background, from acting to directing. The drama facilities include a 20' thrust stage; equipped with stage lighting and audio, costume room, and a drama tech room that houses the dimmer and soundboards.

The Camp Matoaka Drama Department holds auditions for four productions every summer. All campers that audition receive parts in the production. For campers that are interested in working behind the scenes, we have workshops in: set design, prop and costume design, and lighting and audio technical support. back to top

Last summer Camp Matoaka hosted four spectacular productions:

  • Into the Woods
  • Bye Bye Birdie
  • Annie
  • The Wizard of Oz

Dance

Dance is an elective at Matoaka, campers may choose to add dance to their scheduleif they wish to do so. Our dance program includes basic intermediate and advanced instruction in ballet, jazz, pointe, tap, modern, hip hop, choreography and musical theatre. All classes are broken down by skill level so girls can learn, improve, and progress through our prorgam during the summer.

The dance department staff consists of three instructors, all of which have extensive background in dance or are currently studying dance. Facilities include three dance studios equipped with 30' x 40' cushioned Hardwood floors, mirrors, wooden ballet bars, and a sound system.  back to top

Music

Another popular elective is music, and as always campers of any age or ability may participate. The camp pianist provides piano lessons to all campers that have an interest. Lessons on other musical instruments may be arranged with other musically talented counselors.

Any campers that have a love for singing are encouraged to join the "Matoaka Singers." The Matoaka Singers lead campfires and perform periodically throughout the summer.

As well as the four drama productions each summer, campers also have the opportunity to star in talent shows, air band nights and bunk karaoke nights.
